Chimp making a monkey out of the Court of Human Rights

Posted by Mathew | 4 June 08

The world is an amazing place. So amazing in fact, that an animal rights activist in Austria is seeking a Court ruling to ascribe inalienable human rights to a 26 y.o. chimpanzee named Matthew. (The naming of this chimp and the author of this article are purely coincidental … besides, following the hypothesis of the literary evolution of personal pronouns, I’ve discarded the extra ‘T’;) ) If the Court rules in favour, Matthew will fall into the legal guardianship of the activist concerned, Paula Stibbe.

According to the article, the sanctuary in which Matthew the chimpanzee resides is closing its doors, and Ms Stibbe is doing her part to protect him. By becoming the chimp’s legal guardian, she’ll be able to take care of him.

I wonder, if the appeal is successful, if that would then mean the sanctuary would then have to remain open. If Matthew the chimpanzee is declared to possess inalienable human rights, would we then see Ms Stibbe move into the sanctuary herself? Obviously, there would then be nothing to prevent her from doing so - what’s good for the chimp is good for the activist, as the saying goes.

The article further expounds the fact that chimps in many ways behave like humans, implying that equal human rights should be afforded to them. This is an interesting argument in itself and, I feel, was the basis perhaps on which Charles Darwin got to thinking about the origin of species. After all, monkeys, apes and chimps have four limbs and predominantly stand upright and gather is very social manners; humans likewise have four limbs, stand upright and are very social. Yes, yes, the similarities are astounding. What logic!

Whereas evolutionists might argue we evolved from the apes - just look how alike we are! - Christians can see the Master’s touch. We note His handiwork. Much like a lover of art can scan an art gallery and identify Picasso’s in the blink of an eye, God has His own signature on His creation. See how wonderful the design of the human hand is? Why not use a similar design for the tail of a fish? Notice how social animals develop similar social structures to humans … well, why not employ that across multiple species, too? One MasterMind, one Master Author = common design elements throughout His most wonderful creations.

Court Claim: Chimps are people, too

I’m not the only one who finds this laughable, right?
