Apple stores - like heaven?
Posted by Mathew | 12 June 08
So I’m a bit of a self-confessed Apple-freak. No, no - not the Granny Smith kind, the iPod kind (actually, the Macintosh kind). It’s something I blame my brother-in-law for. Well in truth, it’s something that I’m thankful to my brother-in-law for … my last Windows PC was a nightmare that I’m happy to forget. But I digress … on with the post.
On June 19, Sydney will take the honour of the first city in Australia to become home to the country’s first bona-fide, ridgy-didge, Apple run-and-operated Apple retail store. It’s what geeks like me in Australia have been looking forward to … for too long, we’ve been the poor second cousin (and still are!) in terms of speedy access to all the new fab gear and gizmos that Apple pumps out throughout any given year. Yes, for too long we’ve been jealous. Well, I’m still jealous … I don’t live
in Sydney. But I take consolation in the strong rumour that my home city, Melbourne, is also opening its arms to Apple in the very near future. But I still digress …
This is all very exciting because, if you have ever seen pictures of (or been fortunate enough to visit) the Apple stores operating in the US (we have resellers in Australia, but they really can’t compare to an Apple owned and run store), they are truly something out of this world. I can think of a few words: Pristine. Funky. Open-range. Glorified. Heavenly … well, there’s lots of white and glass, right?
Well, for the Mac hedonist in those of us like-minded Mac geeks, an Apple store in all its glory probably is considered heaven. And it got me thinking again about what God has in store (pardon the pun) for us once we pass through this life and enter into eternity. Jesus, in the book of John, says:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” - John 14:1-4
So we’re gonna kick it with Jesus - and this is not in the text, but I’m certain there’ll be high-speed wireless and a Macintosh in every room - sounds awesome.
Of course, the Book of Revelation becomes far more descriptive and denotes heaven as being a place where there will no more tears, sickness or death; where the streets are lined with gold with precious jewels aplenty, with the river of life flowing in all it’s beauty throughout the new city. It’s going to be a spectacular place. Have a read through chapters 21 and 22.
While us Aussies have waited for Apple to open up its stores on our shores, as Christians we should be much more eager with anticipation to see what God, the creator of heaven and earth and all of their intricate wonders, has in place for us in His brilliant kingdom.
And I must close by saying that I was kidding about there being a Mac in every room of the house of God … I’m sure they’ll be at least two!
Grace and blessings to you (even you Windows folk!).
