Was Ethan McNamee manipulated by pro-GLBT lobbyists?

ethan mcnameeWhile researching my earlier article on the pro-gay marriage rally speech performed by nine year-old Ethan McNamee, one thing I noticed on the various GLBT blogs were comments that conservatives claimed Ethan was manipulated.

I don’t really know if this claim is substantiated; I couldn’t even find a conservative blog or news article that covered the event in which this view was apparently put forward. Perhaps I didn’t delve deep enough into the Google search results? Or I just didn’t read through the many comments left by people on the news sites and blogs that had articles on the subject?

While I don’t personally ascribed to the notion that Ethan was manipulated, I believe it is… Continue reading ...

Humour: some crazy vids

Ok … now for something a little more light hearted. I do believe that if you’re not prepared to poke fun at yourself every now and then, then you’re just too hard up and devoid of any true joy.

I was poking around the interwebs and stumbled across a blog called Crazy Christian Clips – and there sure are some crazy ones.

For your viewing pleasure enjoyment punishment entertainment, I’ve selected a few of the ones that had me laughing.

#5 – Smooth Grandmama. Some pretty clever lyrics put to Michael Jackson’s song, Smooth Criminal

#4 – Bible in a minute. Two crazy mormons break it on down.

Ethan McNamee – nine year-old gay-marriage advocate

Young Ethan McNamee – just nine years old and a third grade student at Montclaire Elementary School in Denver, Colorado – has done what most third graders wouldn’t even conceive of doing: organising a public rally on the steps of the Colorado state capitol building. His topic was two-fold, and not what you would normally expect of a nine-year old: marriage equality and equal protection for the gay and lesbian community.

As the reports go, young Ethan is the neighbour of a lesbian couple who had first given him the idea of organising such a rally. Having been told by his neighbours that they were not allowed to marry because they were of the same sex, Ethan took it upon himself to speak out for the gay and lesbian… Continue reading ...

Quote: The Importance of Family

James Q. Wilson, a political scientist, in the March 1996 issue of Reader’s Digest, wrote:

The family is not one of several alternative lifestyles. It is not an arena in which rights are negotiated; it is not an old-fashioned barrier to a promiscuous sex life; it is not a set of cost-benefit calculations. It is a commitment for which there is no feasible substitute… There is no way to prepare for this commitment other than to make it… Married life is shaped by the fact that the couple has made a solemn vow before family and friends that this is for keeps…

HT to Salting Society, where I first spotted and subsequently and unashamedly flogged this quote from. I liked it so much, I had to… Continue reading ...

Third grader organises and speaks at pro-gay marriage rally

This is a video taken of Ethan McNamee’s speech, which he delivered at a pro-gay marriage rally that he organised for a school project last Saturday, May 16. Ethan, a nine year old third grader from Montclaire Elementary School in Denver, Colorado, showed amazing poise for his age in front of the crowd that had gathered outside of the steps of the Denver state capitol building.

Below the video, I have also transcribed Ethan’s speech (as best I could. Please let me know if you believe I’ve transcribed anything incorrectly.

I will follow up with some remarks on this event in a separate post.
(This is now published: Ethan McNamee – 9yo gay-marriage advocate.)

While I definitely applaud Ethan’s spirit, courage and confidence to organise such… Continue reading ...

Carrie Prejean: nude pics, hypocrisy, intolerance and … irrelevancy 101

carrieprejeanSince Carrie Prejean became an American household name on April 19 during the Miss USA beauty pageant for her “politically incorrect” response to a question on same-sex marriage, there has been no end of malicious attacks on her name – in the media and the blogosphere.

To recap, Ms Prejean answered that she believed marriage was to be between one man and one woman. When she completed her answer, two things occurred: 1) the crowd at the pageant erupted in applause in support of her answer; 2) the blogosphere began lighting up with livid, pro-homosexual rants denouncing her “bigotry” and proceeded to drag out the shovels from their sheds to see what dirt they could dig up.

Now irrespective… Continue reading ...

18+: Christian media – Church services to follow?

Anyone who says that the legalisation of homosexuality in general, and the legalisation of same-sex marriage in particular, is “just a progression of civil rights” – think again. The Brazilian government is considering on labelling Christian media content with viewing warnings of 18+.

From the article published on www.lifesitenews.com:
Brazil’s Secretary of Justice reportedly told Folha that, while such programming would be restricted to after 11 pm, “the ideal is that they not be shown at any time.”

If carried out in accordance with Brazilian President Luiz Lula’s definition of “homophobia,” the new restrictions will effectively ban public statements on television that identify homosexual behavior as sinful and/or unhealthy.

“Pornographic sex education classes that praise homosexuality cannot be rated as ‘unsuitable for children and teens,’ because… Continue reading ...

“Jesus” iPhone app trashed (for being, well, trashy)

Something a little different – Apple have officially apologised for approving for sale an iPhone application called Me So Holy. The app, which I have not seen apart from the vid posted by the developers on their website, www.mesoholy.com, reportedly allowed you to place someone else’s face over that of an iconic religious figure.

Hence, you could replace the face of Jesus with your own, your mother-in-law’s, your dog or cat, or mix’n'match with the faces from other religiously iconic figures.

I’m curious as to why Apple have removed the app from sale (though I welcome it) from their iTunes store, yet continue to allow other distasteful applications like iFart (self-explanatory) and Wobble (an app that lets you make portions of a photo or picture to wobble… Continue reading ...

“50 reasons why religion sucks” – Day 2 of 5!

This is the second installment lot of 10 so-called “reasons” as to why religion sucks. This follows the previous part one post of Responses to 50 reasons why religion sucks.

By now, you should have the idea that this is not really about giving answers, but more about dismantling the actual objections in order to show them for the farcical, thoughtless, empty arguments that they are.

Responses to 50 reasons why religion sucks, pt.1 of 5

Thoughts out !oud tends to get a fair bit of Google search traffic for the term “religion sucks”. This seems to be in response to a blog post I published a few months back titled: Why Religion Sucks (and will destroy your soul). As a result, I thought I would address one of the search result items that I found when I punched in the same search term: 50 Reasons Why Relgion Sucks. It occurred to me that many people are likely parroting some of these very “reasons” as to why religion sucks, so let’s challenge them a little.

The format is a simple objection / response format. As there are 50 of them, I’ve decided to split up the responses into five separate posts – just to… Continue reading ...

Swineflu, condoms and Twitterologies

Here’s a gem from the Twitterverse that I saw the other day:
“90 people get the swine flu and everyone wants to wear a mask. Millions get HIV, and no one wants to wear a condom”

Of course, it is far, far easier to refrain from having unprotected, promiscuous sex (therefore halting the spread of HIV altogether) than it is to suppress a sneeze.

(I gather the implied reference in the Twitter comment was in relation to the Pope’s recent statements in Africa last month re: the ineffectiveness of condoms in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and that abstinence instead should be the main weapon (for which the Pope was trashed by the main stream media as being outdated. Outdated or not (it’s not outdated … un-applied… Continue reading ...

Why the Pope is right about condoms … still!

Well, I don’t believe much has changed since my last post on this topic: Pope disses condoms as Saviour from HIV / AIDS – the Pope is still very much right: condoms do very little to fight and reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS.

In the editorial of Family Voice Australia‘s May 2009 VoxPoint publication, David and Rosyln Phillips lay down yet more startling facts about why the promotion of condoms does very little. Conversely, some of what they have to say also lends support to the American Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) stance on why practicing homosexuals should still be prohibited from donating blood to organisations like the Red Cross. (Re-read my article, Blood on the boil: Homosexuals see red over discrimination, on why… Continue reading ...
