Carrie Prejean: nude pics, hypocrisy, intolerance and … irrelevancy 101

Posted by Mathew | May 18, 2009 | 5 Comments

carrieprejeanSince Carrie Prejean became an American household name on April 19 during the Miss USA beauty pageant for her “politically incorrect” response to a question on same-sex marriage, there has been no end of malicious attacks on her name – in the media and the blogosphere.

To recap, Ms Prejean answered that she believed marriage was to be between one man and one woman. When she completed her answer, two things occurred: 1) the crowd at the pageant erupted in applause in support of her answer; 2) the blogosphere began lighting up with livid, pro-homosexual rants denouncing her “bigotry” and proceeded to drag out the shovels from their sheds to see what dirt they could dig up.

Now irrespective of what you think about beauty pageants, the issue at stake here is that of the liberty of free speech – you know, the ability to respectfully disagree with another’s viewpoint without the fear of being gunned down for it? But what gushed out after the televising of the event on that fateful Sunday in April was a torrent of vitriol of the tallest order and it was very apparent that, according to gay activists and pro-homosexual groups, Ms Prejean had no right whatsoever to honestly, and courteously, express her viewpoint.

I’m constantly amazed that the subject of same-sex marriage ALWAYS manages to bring out the worst of people’s bigotry, intolerance, hatred, narrow-mindedness and hypocrisy.

And it always comes from the left – the actual proponents of same-sex marriage. How queer is that?

What should really get your goat, however, is that everything that was thrown at Ms Prejean for her comments failed spectacularly to address her opinion. Take these following “arguments” touted by the press and bloggers for example, and then mentally add the sentence so her views on same-sex marriage are wrong and she’s a bigot to the end of each bullet point:

  • Ms Prejean was photographed semi-nude
  • Ms Prejean’s parents divorced
  • Her parents accused eachother of being gay
  • The Miss California Organization paid for Ms Prejean’s breast implants
  • Ms Prejean is a Christian
  • Ms Prejean is a model and a beauty queen
  • Ms Prejean breached her contract with the Miss California Organization
  • Ms Prejean has biases (unlike pro-same sex marriage advocates, apparently)
  • Ms Prejean’s views on same-sex marriage match those of President Obama’s
  • Ms Prejean spoke out against same-sex marriage … so her views on same-sex marriage are wrong and she’s a bigot

Did you remember to add “so her views on same-sex marriage are wrong and she’s a bigot” at the end of each sentence above? If you did, did any of the arguments flung at Ms Prejean address the issue at hand? I think you’ll agree that they definitely did not. They didn’t even come close.

(Tell me – at any point, did Ms Prejean ever make the comment that gay couples should not have the right to marry? If she did, she would of course be wrong – gays have the same rights to marry as do straights: the freedom to marry who they wish of the opposite sex. Gays and straights also have the same limitations on who they can’t marry – someone of the same sex.

Sounds equal to me.)

As I was posting a few items up on Twitter regarding, and in support of, Carrie Prejean’s stance on same-sex marriage, I received a few direct messages from a self-confessed gay atheist. Apparently, Ms Prejean is not entitled to her views on same-sex marriage because “she would never been [sic] able to dress like that according the bible”.

Oh, really? From what I recall, Eve was created buck-naked and modelled for Adam, so much so that he sang of her beauty (Gen 2:22-23).

When I asked the fellow what part of the Bible he believed prevented Ms Prejean being a model or why a semi-nude pic of her disallowed her from expressing an opposing view to same-sex marriage, the response was “her words making herself sound holly [sic] … she made herself sound like a ‘good old Christian’ girl”.

I’m not even sure that even addressed my query, let alone why Ms Prejean’s opposition to same-sex marriage is wrong.

I pressed a little more, however, and stated that Ms Prejean’s words weren’t holy, nor even religious. That she stated a belief and that the response was to attack anything other than her belief.

The comment I then received was “I don’t want to further debate it, I just report the info,” quickly followed by “the picture may not be relevant to the ssm (same-sex marriage) debate, but it is to her character. She speaks like she is righteous.”

So? Again, would you mind addressing why her comments against same-sex marriage are actually wrong, other than “I don’t like them”?

All responses I’ve heard, read and seen that drag down Carrie Prejean for her bravery to respectfully express her opinion against same-sex marriage are the very essence of irrelevancy, intolerance, bigotry and hypocrisy. Strangely, the very things that she herself has been accused of.

This goes to show that while you can go to great lengths to assassinate someone’s character, you can’t assassinate the truth of what they believe in – at best, you can only obscure it.

Irrelevancy 101. Class dismissed.
