thoughts out !oud

Biblically minded and ever-so-slightly irreverent

A Christ-centred three months – and counting!

I thought it appropriate for another summary of content from my new co-blogging venture over at The Aristophrenium. Between us, the writing staff have produced a number of good thought-provoking articles (a total of 52 in our first three months, no less!); but perhaps most exciting of all is that we have added a fourth member to our team: Adam. With Adam now joining us, and the rest of us firing on all cylinders, the next quarter at The Aristophrenium is set to be amazing. Come check us out and subscribe to our RSS Feed. We hope to continue to present our readers with a Christ-centred, intellectually honest forum that welcomes engagement from a great variety of people – even… Continue reading ...

Celebrating two years online … now there’s a thought

Today marks the 2nd year anniversary of thoughts out !oud.

It really doesn’t seem all that long ago when I first figured out how to install Wordpress, chose an appalling Wordpress theme (I dunno what it was … some garishly bright yellow and orange sun-thing), cobbled together my first post and delved right on into the blogosphere. The two years have gone quick, have been an interesting journey – full of lessons and growth – and during the time there are many people I’ve come to know and to whom I’ve been grateful for along the way.

Following are just some of the highlights, reflections and learnings for me over the last two years.

Small beginnings

Top 10 thoughts for 2009

thanksThere’s something about the end of the calendar year that causes us to reflect on the year that has just casually slipped us by. Typically celebrated in a fluttering of fireworks (or dazzling summer lightening storms and resounding thunder – as was the case in Melbourne, Australia, this last New Year’s Eve) most people take the time to spend with family and friends, among who a great many of them still remember “last year’s New Year’s Eve” (or should that be “the year before last’s New Year’s Eve”?) as though it were yesterday.

Memories can be a curious thing. So it’s with similar curiosity that I’m posting a listing of my most viewed articles for 2009 on thoughts out !oud

Yet more WordPress upgrade troubles, v2.8

Seems since I upgraded Wordpress to v2.8 on the last day or so that things have gone a little whacky on my blog again. Why do I have such rotten luck with WP upgrades?!

Anyway, please sit tight while I try and sort out what’s causing the issues – hopefully, just another plugin conflict which, when deactivated, will set things aright again.

In the meantime, if you think you have an inkling of what the issue is, please let me know!… Continue reading ...

My Thoughts (Blog RSS Feeds) are back up and running

Don’t ask me how I did it, but the RSS Feeds to my blog are again functional, after much fluffing around (seems it was a simple Plugin conflict on Wordpress). This includes both subscribing via a RSS Reader (like Google Reader) as well subscribing to my posts via email (form below, should you feel that way inclined).

RSS Feeds are busted – oops! – think you could help?

Well, I don’t honestly know how it happened, but subscribing to my blog’s RSS feed seems to be busted, either via a RSS Reader or via email subscriptions. I’ve spent a bit of time googling and tinkering but I’m still stumped, so looks like the feeds will be down for a while longer.

In the meantime, if you happen to read this post and you suspect you could assist me with my RSS feed issue, I would love to hear from you!

Here’s the error that Feedburner is giving me at the moment:

Feed Address: feed://www.thoughtsoutloud.org/index.php/feed/

HTTP Error (Code) and Message: (404) Feed not found error: FeedBurner cannot locate this feed URI.

I also seem to have lost any comments on Posts … but… Continue reading ...

Thoughts out !oud and the middle eastern Oud

I have felt that I need to blog an apology to the many, many enthusiasts who are scouring the internet for information about the Middle Eastern instrument, the Oud (a guitar-like instrument, pronounced ud, I believe), and who are ending up at my blog: Thoughts out !oud.

Monitoring the free blogging stats tool for my blog I have noticed with interest that my blog is ranking reasonably well in searches for the Oud, turning up in search strings such as: Oud, Oud for sale, Ouds for sale Sydney, thinking out oud, Oud built, stand for Oud, out Oud, Oud Cartoons, playing the Oud, all about the Oud, Oud poetry, etc. It became obvious to me that, so far as Google and other search engines are concerned, Thoughts

Error 404s no more … blog’s up!

Phew! After a week of Thoughts out !oud dwelling in limbo, it looks as though things are back up and running as they ought to be!

Firstly, a thank you must go out to Rick of The Narrow Path who kindly leant some of his precious web developer time to help me figure out what damage I had caused my blog. Cheers, Rick! In the end, it seemed that just deleting everything off my host and reinstalling Wordpress v2.5.1 did the trick for me. (Which was by far the better option than paying my host $300 to restore my blog prior to cyclone Mathew!)

Although, the only draw back seems to be that my chosen theme no longer functions properly … so I have a… Continue reading ...

Blog ‘technical’ difficulties …

I attempted to upgrade my version of WordPress yesterday. It didn’t turn out so good, unfortunately. However, if you read my posts via your RSS reader or if you have subscribed by email, your reading should remain unhindered as those two avenues are still working, I believe.

If you’ve just found me today, things are looking pretty boring and bland. The links to any of my other posts are not working (return Error 404s), so only my most recent posts will appear in full on the homepage.

I’ve sent out an SOS to a friend of a friend, so hopefully everything will be back up and running sooner rather than later.

Thanks for you patience!… Continue reading ...

[Oh, and if you were wondering what the Chinese section was (菲利普曼纽尔和芳曼纽尔), wonder no more! It’s a page dedicated to some picture slideshows of my brother-in-law’s recent marriage to a beautiful Chinese bride. But I’ve password protected it … hey, it contains some photos of me … and I’d… Continue reading ...

setting up shop …

Well! I am Mr Procrastination. Of that, there is no doubt. I don’t know how long I’ve been thinking of putting a blog together, but it has been a long, long while. (You ever heard of that live-in relative, Mr Excuses? Yeah, well, he’s been a bunk-buddy of mine for longer than I care to admit. I’m drafting my eviction notice to him at the moment.) I suppose the biggest hurdle for me in launching myself into the blogosphere is having something – a theme, a purpose – to blog about; I think I may have found something Continue reading ...
